I've been finding some stock turbos for strangely low prices on DC Craigslist

Pretty cool, usually DC seems to be overpriced stuff or just about right stuff.

The snap oversteer is a suspension design 'problem' that can be remedied. Not an inherent problem with mid-engine. A change in geometry can make it go away.
If you are a pedestrian 'sporty car' shopper get a 1993 which has the cure. If you are an autocrosser who really wants the happy tail to rotate, go ahead and get the 1990-1992 cars with the 'problem.'
Early S2000s were criticized for the same condition.

yeah I was aware that Toyota "neutered" the later models.. I'm new to mid engine cars but I'm not too unfamiliar with sporty cars. I have no trouble driving my friends AP1 S2k, but I can imagine that the mr2 is a different beast.

go to a skidpan day or defensive driving course, the snap-oversteer problem is overstated.. you're not going to go pirouetting off every wet corner.. but you should learn the limits either way.
If you get a t-top model look for mould/damp in the carpets/seats... they all leak at some point, just try and find one that was looked after.

are awesome for parts
any specific questions? I've owned a '94 Australian model with the 3SGE and now own a '91 JDM Turbo.

the big difference is you are driving an s2000 anticipating sporty driving. Same for autocrossers in MR2s. But when you are a middle aged art teacher on the way to school on a slick morning, it's a different story.

Here's everything you need to know - get a AW111 instead.

Not bad, but there are a good amount of mods, reversible, but starting from a clean slate is always nice to do.

MR2 Turbos are faster. AW11 (1st generation) is more fun.

I like the AW11, it's just that the 2nd gen MR2 just looks better to me. I'm fine with a N/A too.

I'd go NA. Still fun, more reliable, more fuel efficient, and way WAY easier to work on (trust me on this one)
